The Haarlem badminton players from Duinwijck have won the national championship this afternoon. The team of which Olympian Selena Piek is a part won in the golden game of Almere.
Duinwijck and Almere were very evenly matched. It was 4-4 after all regular games. In the golden game, Duinwijckers Ties van der Lecq and Brian Wassink took on Alex Vlaar and Adam Hall. The Haarlem duo made it 4-0 in no time, after which the lead was extended to 7-4. Van der Lecq and Wassink increased the score from 10-6 to 13-10. It got a little tense at a score of 16-13, but the duo eventually pulled the longest straw: 21-16.
It is for the 27th time in the history of the Eredivisie that the Haarlem-squad is national champion. The last title was from 2018/19, the following year, today’s opponent, Almere, won. Last year there was no play due to corona.
