Bad luck for Drenthina: grubs turn a field into a barren steppe

FOOTBALL – Bad luck for second division team Drenthina. One of the competition fields of the football club from Emmen cannot be used for the time being, because the field looks suspiciously like a barren steppe.

Grubs (larvae of the May beetle) have taken care of the grass. The field does not look green, but brown with quite a few holes in it. Not exactly the mat that makes the heart of the football fan beat faster. Therefore, it is not possible to play a match on it for the time being.

“We have had this problem before,” said Frank Griimink, chairman of the football club. “Our main field, among other things, has already been ruined, although it is now in good shape because we recently played against FC Emmen.”

The vermin seems to come from the Emmerdennen, through which the field has now been plowed. The Drenthina teams are expected to be unable to play on that turf at least until the winter break. “Fortunately, the municipality has ensured that our training field is prepared for competition. That field will soon be used intensively, so I hope that they will still be good enough to play in the winter.”

Despite the disappearance of the field, Drenthina’s competition program is not in danger for the time being, the competition secretary has assured. “It will be a matter of trial and error, but with better planning it will not immediately cause major problems,” says Griemink.
