Backcombed hair: how to backcomb straight or curly hair

TOattention. The backcombed hair is back. The “coffins” of past memory that have conquered grandmothers and very young mothers between the sixties and the sparkling eighties are once again with us. Confirmation? From celebs, as always.

Among the many, Lady Gaga’s XXL hair in House of Gucci, Michelle Pfeiffer’s hairstyle in the new series The First Lady and Lily Collins’ Sixties at the premiere of the second season of Emily in Paris. Not to mention that voluminous hair has been a trend for dinners, Christmas parties and various New Years. In short, 2022 will be a full volume year.

The atmospheres are those from the sixties to the eighties when backcombing was a serious business. Just think of Brigitte Bardot, with large volumes on the top of the hairstyle and the rest of the hair left loose on the shoulders or woven into highly respectable crops and semi-crops.

Another example? Audrey Hepburn’s mythical “banana” while having breakfast in front of Tiffany’s glittering shop windows.

From the New York Sixties to the California Seventies: Farrah Fawcett is still today the undisputed icon of those looking for a voluminous hair at the right point, natural and easily replicable at home. The seventies put aside the structured bonnets of the previous decade to focus on voluminous but more natural hair, between fringes and tufts.

Cotonatura, in the Eighties, the same permanent

And in the Eighties? Suffice it to say that the permanent service was a must in every salon and that they all went through it at the time. Whether it was the classic perm, the frizzy curl, the darting frisé, giving volume to the hair was an imperative at the time.

And all the styling products, gels, mousses, lacquers were essential to “keep up” these scaffolding.

The steps for perfect backcombing today

And today? Backcombing is making a comeback, perhaps less elaborate at the time but still of great impact. Volume is given to crops, seeds collected and tails, parade on the catwalk and even on red carpets, are protagonists in TV series.

The latest in chronological order is Michelle Pfeiffer who sports a Seventies cotton hair in the role of Betty Ford, one of the most beloved American first ladies, in the new series The First Lady.

How to backcomb your hair

But how to do a backcomb at home? In three simple steps, obviously choosing volumizing products that help in the business.

1. By dividing the hair into locks, take the first one and stretch it upwards. With a medium-toothed comb, it is combed from the tips to the roots in order to create volume and fix it with lacquer.

2. It goes like this for the whole head, or in any case for the part you want to backcomb, always fixing with the styling product.

3. When finished, gently comb the upper part of the hair creating the hairstyle. A precaution: when combing, you must not pass a brush or comb up to the root but remain on the “surface” so as not to lose volume.

The same procedure can also be used for tufts and fringes or if you want to give volume only on the top and not on the lengths. In this case, in fact, it will be enough to start backcombing from mid-length to the root.
