The Dutch cycling star Mathieu van der Poel will not start at the World Cross Country Championships in Fayetteville / Arkansas (January 29th to 30th). The four-time champion and defending champion declared his cancellation with persistent back problems. It is still unclear what impact the complaints will have on the classic season on the road.
“I haven’t reached the level I had hoped for since the tour because of the back pain. I just want to leave that behind. The only thing that can help is a longer break.”said van der Poel: “It would be unwise to interrupt this phase again. Not to defend my title is quite a blow, however.”
