Even unborn babies are not spared from air pollution. This is shown by new research from Hasselt University and the University of Aberdeen, published in The Lancet Planetary Health. The scientists showed that traces of air pollution can already be found in various vital organs of fetuses. “Previous research by our team has already shown that sooty particles can be found in the placenta during all trimesters of pregnancy. Now we see that those soot particles do not remain there, but actually end up in the organs of the fetus”, says Prof. Tim Nawrot (UHasselt).
