If the road to the automotive is electric, the sailing route is hybrid: the common goal is to be able to go anywhere and in any case, without polluting. A few days ago, an extraordinary example of the concept went into the sea. This is expressed by the B.Yond 37M Benetti, the latest jewel of Italian shipbuilding, in this case of the Azimut-Benetti group which has been at the top for decades. A 37-meter – with steel hull and aluminum superstructure – which technically belongs to the category of expedition yachts, i.e. designed to guarantee maximum autonomy and top comfort. The B.Yond 37M Benetti is precisely the first yacht in the category to be entirely sustainable thanks to the new hybrid engines, designed in collaboration with Siemens Energy. The innovative E – Mode Hybrid system of the German factory allows the optimization of energy consumption on board according to the specific usage profiles, ensuring a reduction in CO2 and NOx emissions never recorded before in such a yacht.

FOUR POWER

“I wanted to imagine a record-breaking boat, and now here it is” said at the end of the launch, the founder and president of the Azimut Benetti group, Paolo Vitelli. Designed by Stefano Righini, B.Yond 37M Benetti is characterized by a fourth deck to raise all the noblest areas of the boat, giving a beautiful panoramic view. To the lower deck the service area is dedicated which includes a real one walking wine cellar it’s a cold room. The main deck is dedicated to the sleeping area for guests, with four suites accessible from a panoramic lounge that Benetti has called the Playroom. Going up to the upper deck, the seating area, completely free from obstacles, opens onto a 360-degree sea view. Higher up, the bridge deck is intended for the owner, while the sun deck houses a dining area with pantry and outdoor table, sheltered by a hard top.

TWO CABINS FOR THE CAPTAIN

Two stairs, one for the guests and one for the crew, allow a completely separate flow, guaranteeing total privacy for the owner and his guests. The organization of the spaces is extremely flexible: the main deck, in addition to the four guest suites, it can also contain the owner’s cabin or the playroom with a panoramic view. In the bridge deck on request, the owner’s cabin or a panoramic veranda can be placed. In the lower deck, the gym can be replaced by a sixth guest cabin. Another novelty is that the captain has two cabins, a large one positioned close to the wheel house, and another contiguous to the crew quarters. If the commander chooses to use the one closest to wheel house, the second destined for him could become a seventh guest cabin. The large garage houses a 6.5 meter tender, a 4.2 meter rescue boat and two jet skis in a protected and hidden area.

GREAT AUTONOMY

As mentioned, the innovative E – Mode Hybrid is one of the strong points. B.Yond 37M can travel in four different modes, just like a hybrid car. Among these the full electric for zero-emission navigation, an exclusive plus thanks to which it is also possible to access protected marine areas or areas forbidden to motor navigation. The lithium battery pack also makes it possible to park at anchor with zero emissions, keeping the generators off and battery-feeding the main on-board utilities. With the new generation of 300 kW / h high energy density batteries it will be possible to enjoy autonomy at anchor up to 8 hours during the day and 12 hours at night. The recharging time of the batteries is only three hours. Estimating an average annual use of one thousand hours, of which 400 at sea and the remaining at anchor, it is possible to obtain a reduction in consumption and CO2 up to 24% and a reduction in NOx up to a maximum of 85%. Autonomy is important: the yacht is able to reach up to 8,200 nautical miles at 9 knots in EcoTransfer mode with the two diesels – generators off and only one propulsion engine on, with a reduction in consumption and CO2 emissions up to 16% and NOx up to 80% compared to a traditional propulsion.
