Former international Desirée van Lunteren is now surprisingly and unexpectedly making her comeback in football more than a year after her retirement. She has signed a contract with the AZ women’s team.
Van Lunteren played 84 times for the Orange and was part of the team that became European champion in 2017 and finished second at the World Cup in 2019.
The 30-year-old defender said goodbye to PSV last April. She wanted to spend more time with her family and focus on a social career. She apparently returned to that, as witnessed by AZ’s announcement that Van Lunteren has signed for one year.
Van Lunteren previously also played for Ajax. In thirteen seasons of club football, she won three national titles and won the KNVB Cup four times.
