The investment of 50 million euros makes it possible to also focus on the psychological and social well-being of patients. “Now we have the ability to make a room very quiet and we can bring in daylight and vary the intensity of the light between morning and evening. We can offer families a warm waiting area and a bedroom to spend the night,” says Bram Dewulf, head of intensive care. Every year, 2,250 patients are admitted to the intensive care unit of the AZ Sint-Jan in Bruges.

AZ Sint-Jan also treated a patient with cardiac arrhythmias with a catheter today, a worldwide first according to the hospital. This technique can also be used to help patients for whom medication does not work.
