AZ Delta tests new implant against migraines

The implant consists of a wafer-thin bioelectronic foil that the doctor installs just under the scalp during an operation. The strap contains electrodes that can give impulses to the nerves and thus keep them under control. Patients carry a small device with which they switch on the system to prevent or moderate a migraine attack.

Positive results

A total of seven to eight Belgian test subjects will participate in the study in the past and coming weeks. Pain specialist Bart Billet leads the team that treats the patients. The first results are promising. The implant improves the quality of life of its wearers.

The Dutch company Salvia BioElectronics developed the technology. Belgian doctor Wim Pollet is co-founder and works as medical director for the start-up.

One in seven people suffer from migraines. Of these, a tenth suffer from chronic migraine. Ways to combat the condition are limited. A second, larger study of the product will start next year in various European countries. AZ Delta will also cooperate in this.
