Axel Witsel’s farewell to Borussia Dortmund has been fixed for a long time. Now the new club is set.
The Belgian international Axel Witsel will play for Atlético Madrid after leaving Borussia Dortmund. The Spanish first division club announced the signing of the 33-year-old for the coming season on Wednesday. Witsel’s contract with BVB expired this summer. The club management of Borussia had signaled early on that they did not want to extend the cooperation that began in 2018.
Witsel was last seen as a candidate for several clubs. This also included the French runners-up Olympique Marseille. According to media reports, Witsel also had offers from the USA, Tunisia and Germany.
The central midfielder, who was born in Liège, has played 143 games at Borussia Dortmund. In the encounters he scored 13 goals and six assists.
