Awake by a huge bang: resident finds car in her living room

A wild chase ended on Monday night against the facade of a house in Sprundel. The resident of the house on Sint Janstraat was sleeping when a car drove into her house. “It’s a big mess here.”

The resident is still very impressed looking at her house on Tuesday morning. “I heard a huge bang around ten to one. For a moment I thought it was an accident,” she told Omroep Brabant. Once downstairs she saw that there was a car in the living room. “I saw smoke in the living room and then I saw the car.”

At that moment there were already a lot of police outside. The crashed motorist was pursued: the man was driving a car stolen from France with license plates stolen in Germany. Officers found firearms and ammunition in the car.

“Bricks are inside and glass from the window is everywhere.”

The house is at the end of a T-junction with Schuurkerkstraat. The motorist came from that direction, knocked over a few posts in front of the house and came to a stop against the facade. “I think he hit the house at full speed,” says the resident.

Extra nasty: the house had just been renovated. “Of course it can always happen, but it is not fun,” says the woman. “Stones are inside, glass from the window is everywhere and books have fallen from the cupboard. The floor is completely broken. It is really a disaster.”

Because it is not yet clear whether the construction of the house is stable enough, the resident is sleeping with her parents who live nearby for the time being. She tries not to think about it too much. “I’m just going to work today. That’s a good distraction.”

The motorist was spotted by officers on Monday night as he drove on the A27 in the direction of Breda. After checking the license plate, they stopped the motorist, but he fled. At speeds of more than 200 kilometers per hour he drove on the A58 in the direction of the Galder junction. The officers managed to keep the car in sight. Ultimately he crashed into the facade of the house in Sprundel. He was checked out in hospital but was not injured.
