Avian Home care under stricter supervision, concerns about safety

The Health and Youth Care Inspectorate has placed Avian Home Care in Breda under stricter supervision. There are concerns about the quality of home care and the inspectorate suspects that Avian is withholding information. The director of Avian in Amsterdam has been discredited before. For example, he would have seriously threatened a competitor.

Avian offers home care in Breda, Tilburg and the surrounding area. “East west, home is best, a saying that you realize all the better when you need care. Everyone wants to continue to live at home and we at Avian Zorg do our utmost to achieve that.” as can be read (including writing errors) on the website.

Safety of care
The Inspectorate questions this and is concerned about the quality and safety of the care that Avian offers:

  • For example, supplied data would not match information that the inspectorate already has.
  • There is no overview of all clients.
  • There is no supervisor present at Avian, although it is mandatory.
  • The inspectorate also finds it worrying that Avian has had new drivers three times since 2019.
  • According to the inspectorate, the healthcare organization also withheld information.
  • There is no response to letters.

‘Beating in a wheelchair’
One of the directors of Avian is 39-year-old Khalid El Ôtmani. He was previously in the news due to several abuses at one of his healthcare companies in Amsterdam.

Like this wrote the Parool that El Ôtmani scolded a competitor after a business conflict. He would have threatened to put the man, who is disabled, in a wheelchair, if he wasn’t already in one.

El Ôtmani would also work with unqualified employees who do not show up for courses. It would be considered gross negligence. The newspaper calls him a ‘care cowboy’ and writes that he has already appeared in court several times because of various conflicts in the industry.

Other company also at fault
Simultaneously with the intervention of the inspection in Breda, measures were also taken at another El Ôtmani company in Rijswijk (South Holland). At his Good4Life foundation, also active in home care, quality and safety are also not guaranteed. This company has also been placed under stricter supervision.

By April 25, both companies must have removed the risks to the quality and safety of care.

Khalid El Ôtmani did not respond to questions from Omroep Brabant.
