Many scenes for the “Avatar” sequel have already been shot and production is in full swing.
There were 13 years between the theatrical releases of “Avatar: A Journey to Pandora” (2009) and “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022). Fans of James Cameron’s novel world now have reason to be happy: the third “Avatar” film is scheduled to be released at Christmas 2025.
“Avatar 3”: Production is underway
In an interview with “TV New Zealand”, director James Cameron now reveals that production for the third part is already underway. Specifically, he says: “We are currently in a very hectic two-year post-production period, so it will be Christmas ’25.” And by the time at the end he actually means the worldwide release of the new sequel. The filmmaker also states that his production would span a longer period of time than most directors in the industry are able to.
He’s actually pretty busy, because while he was filming “Avatar: The Way of Water” he also started working on the third and fourth “Avatar” films and already had many scenes for the sequels in the can. Cameron wanted to avoid the younger actors appearing too old for their film parts during later filming. According to “Entertainment Weekly”, the Netflix series “Strange Things” would come to mind as a negative example of this topic. In this format, the cast has already outgrown the roles and now many moments seem unintentionally funny.
James Cameron only wants to film in New Zealand
Cameron, a native of Canada, now lives in Wellington, New Zealand. In order to support the film industry in the country, the Oscar winner wants to shoot each of his films exclusively in New Zealand for an indefinite period of time. “If we want the industry here, if we want it to thrive, we have to make sure it thrives,” he explained his plan in an interview with TVNZ Breakfast.
What awaits us in “Avatar 3”?
At the “Critics Choice Awards” in early 2023, Cameron revealed what fans could expect from “Avatar 3”: the element of fire. “The fire has a symbolic meaning in the film and there is a culture that specifically revolves around this concept. “That’s probably saying too much,” the director told Deadline. As in “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), the Na’vi invented by James Cameron will probably meet other inhabitants of the planet Pandora again.
