Actually, “Avatar 2” was supposed to hit the cinemas a good seven years ago. When the first part caused a sensation in 2010 and was a huge success at the box office, director James Cameron already promised a sequel and a release date. A little later, the film was officially announced for December 2, 2014. However, the appointment could not be kept – just like four others. The “Avatar 2” is said to have been completely turned off since 2020.
There are several reasons for the many shifts. For one, “Avatar” is very complex in post-production. Numerous effects have to be integrated harmoniously and, moreover, “Avatar 2” is again produced in 3D. On the other hand, director James Cameron was always busy with other projects. For example, he brought a 3D version of “Titanic” to the cinemas and took part in the films “Atila: Battle Angel” and “Terminator: Dark Fate”. And then came the corona pandemic, which caused delays throughout the film business. Now it looks like “Avatar” will actually be in theaters soon. The current start date is December 2, 2022.
First trailer for “Avatar 2”
At the CinemaCon, which is currently taking place in Las Vegas, visitors were shown a first teaser trailer in 3D. Hardly anyone spoke in the trailer, but according to the visitors there were atmospheric images from the different regions of Andorra. Cameron also announced the film’s new title, Avatar: The Way of Water.
For the time being, the trailer for the film is intended to be seen exclusively before the Marvel film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which hits theaters on May 4th. The trailer will only be published on the Internet a week later. By the way, “Avatar 2” shouldn’t be the only sequel to “Avatar: Departure for Pandora”. At least three more films are planned.
At this year’s CinemaCon, not only was the trailer for “Avatar 2” shown, but also some film sequels were officially announced. For example, Sony is planning a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Warner Bros. has again announced “The Batman 2” – and that Robert Pattinson will slip back into the role of the masked avenger.
