Automotive industry criticizes EU decision on combustion engines

BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – The Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) criticizes the EU decision that from 2035 only emission-free new cars may be sold. “It is negligent to set goals for the period after 2030 without being able to make appropriate adjustments based on current developments,” said VDA President Hildegard Müller late Thursday evening. As examples, she named the expansion of the charging infrastructure, imminent dependency on raw materials and whether sufficient renewable energies can be generated. “The EU must now immediately go on the offensive with the framework conditions,” stressed Müller.

The EU must now conclude energy partnerships and raw material agreements as quickly as possible in order to ensure a corresponding supply for the future. In addition, the VDA President spoke out in favor of the existing fleet of combustion engines being able to be operated in a climate-neutral manner. Synthetic fuels would also be needed for this.

So-called e-fuels are controversial for use in road traffic. Although they can also be used to run cars with combustion engines in a climate-friendly manner, their production is expensive and energy-intensive. Therefore, many argue that the scarce commodity should be better used in air and sea transport./mjm/DP/he
