Authoritative British military think tank predicts “more dangerous decade” | Abroad

Although there are already several wars going on around the world, an authoritative British military think tank expects the next ten years to become even “more dangerous”. In its annual report, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) speaks of an “age of insecurity”.

The report discusses the wars between Israel and Hamas and between Russia and Ukraine, but also about the rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, where China is taking an increasingly assertive position. According to the IISS, there is a “very unstable security situation”, which has put relations on edge.

According to the IISS, worldwide 2.2 trillion dollars will be spent on defense in 2023, 9 percent more than a year earlier. The analysts expect that even more money will go to defense in 2024.

Weapons production

The think tank points out that like-minded democracies increasingly seek military cooperation to defend themselves. That is why the production of weapons and ammunition in Europe and the United States has been significantly increased.

Russia

There is also a lot of production in Russia, but according to the IISS the Kremlin has been forced to opt for “quantity over quality”. For example, the Russians are said to have already lost 3,000 tanks in the battle in Ukraine. That is approximately the number of tanks the Russians had when they invaded the neighboring country in February 2022. Despite major losses, Ukraine is said to have improved in quality since then, thanks to Western supplies.

The report also highlights Iran’s growing role in global conflicts, currently mainly through supporting the Houthi rebels in Yemen and supplying drones to Russia.
