It has not been an easy road for Diego Miani and Luvina Barbosal to get here, turning their company, in less than two years and in the midst of a pandemic, into a benchmark for innovation in terms of trailers. “It was not easy. I had already made trailers at one point, then I ventured into a food truck gastronomic company, Luvina, I cooked and we ended up having to prepare more than 800 dishes per weekend. Until the pandemic hit and that same weekend we had to donate the food we had prepared for two events with 2,000 diners. After paying everything outstanding, we had only $7,500 in change. So it occurred to me to make partitions for taxis, I bought polycarbonate with that silver, we ran everything we had for the food truck in the shed, we set up a table and designed a partition that was anti-vandal, it served much more than just to protect the taxi driver from COVID . And they began to buy from us, and that’s how we started working again”, says Diego.
– How did you start with DM Trailers?
In 2020, since I was in the Chamber of Trailer Manufacturers, we began to make a mini trailer, somewhat disastrous, but since we had the gastronomic helmet, we made it smaller, we put a bed on it, then we made another, we published, to people liked it and there we started the wheel again. We made the first mobile home, from that we went to a 3-meter model, we went back to make two smaller ones and the same people suggested modifications that we incorporated. And there we launched to do bigger.
– What makes you different from other manufacturers of mobile homes and trailers?
We change the industry because we use nautical elements. We make them in the same way that a yacht, a sailboat is made. That quality of work on an RV is what makes it attractive. The furniture, the finishes, everything gives it another category. It sets us apart from other companies, which are also very good and have a good product, that we are the only ones that work on a single piece, something that customers liked. That’s when we realized what we were really offering, when customers told us they came from elsewhere, but they kept our product.
– What are the models you have to offer?
We have a wide range, from an eight foot model to a twenty foot one. And we are about to release a unit in two months, which is going to be very good, which is going to be very compact, very light, we have been making it more sophisticated.
– Do you sell only in Argentina?
Yes, for now yes, everything is very complicated. We have the licenses to sell abroad, with which they can not only be patented in Argentina but also in other countries. When we have the product in such a way that if something fails we can send you the replacement, then we will. There is still a long way to go to export, but we are on the right track.
– Do you keep in touch with customers?
We have the client’s contact from the first moment to the last.
– Are the designs your own?
Yes, we have an architect, but the ideas are ours. He draws and takes the ideas we give him to turn them into a project. For example, we went on vacation in April and we took a minivan. We went to Bariloche and we brought a lot of ideas to include and that make it more functional, covering more needs.
After so many vicissitudes, today, what is the goal ahead of you?
We have an engineer, a plant manager and 70 employees, we want to reach 100. We are roofing a part of the plant. We also want to change some internals of the models. Now, for example, we make the cabinets out of wood and we want to change them to fiberglass to make it lightweight. For that, to make it more of the nautical style, we have to take the weight off of it. The countertops are already fiberglass. In short, we are putting together a true automaker, with an assembly line, and our next goal is to have a well-automated plant to save time. And above all, continue to enjoy our work. We are very happy working together and doing what we do.
