The author and creator of the “Game of Thrones” universe George RR Martin will no longer work with the US pay-TV broadcaster HBO in the future. Martin announced this on his personal blog. How this will affect the spin-off series “House of the Dragons” is not yet known. The second season is still on the way.
George RR Martin is on strike with his colleagues
The mills in the Hollywood dream factory are just standing still. The screenwriters’ union has been on strike since May this year to demand better working conditions and fairer wages. Since July 14, the union of actors has also joined them out of solidarity. The first group also includes Martin, who also showed solidarity with the strikers. The American has worked with HBO since 2007, when they adapted his book series A Song of Ice and Fire into the hit series Game of Thrones. The author also provided advice on the spin-off “House of Dragons”.
Now George RR Martin has announced that he and the pay-TV network will no longer be working together. His contract, which was supposed to run until 2026, was terminated early on June 1, 2023. However, this will not affect the second season of “Game of Thrones: House of Dragons”. Since the series is being shot in the UK and the scripts were ready before the industrial action, the season is set to wrap up as planned. However, Martin will no longer be on board as a producer for the further spin-off “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight”. It is not yet known whether the premature end of the collaboration is related to Martin’s participation in the strikes.
“House of the Dragons”, on the other hand, loses another important figure behind the scenes. Last year, co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik left the series after the end of the first season.
The second season of “Game of Thrones: House of the Dragons” is expected to appear on WOW in 2024.
