Austria Vienna: Alexander Grünwald ends his career in the summer

Senior Professional

Alexander Grünwald (32) from Austria Wien will end his active career after this season in the summer. The Austrian club announced this on Wednesday. The attacking midfielder switched from Wiener Neustadt to Austria in 2011, where he is by far the longest-serving professional in coach Manfred Schmid’s team.

“Alex Grünwald helped shape a decade. For me, he is the epitome of an Austrian,” said sports director Manuel Ortlechner, who had played with Grünwald. Born in Klagenfurt, he played in 325 games in his eleven years, in which he contributed 78 goals and 59 assists. Grünwald, who was already active for Austria in his youth, won the championship title with the Viennese in 2013. A cruciate ligament rupture prevented him from participating in the Champions League. In the past two seasons, the number 10 was primarily seen as a joker. This spring he then scored important goals against WAC and Admira in the race to take part in the championship group. Austria can again qualify for international business.

“It’s a decision I don’t take lightly because football is and has been my life for as long as I can remember. But I think it’s a good time to devote more time to my family and, after a number of injuries, to put my body and my health first,” said Grünwald, who became a father for the first time at Easter. Before the offensive player, Markus Suttner (35), another Austria veteran, had already announced that he would end his career in the summer.
