Australian police would like to speak to a walker who was near the spot where Céline Cremer disappeared. Our compatriot was reported missing last Monday, but the last contact dates back to two weeks ago. Her white Honda was found in the parking lot of Philosopher Falls, on Tasmania’s west coast.
Cremer was last seen on June 17 in Waratah, a town about ten kilometers from the falls. Police so far assumed she visited the rainforest tourist attraction three days later. However, the possibility is now being taken into account that our compatriot turned up there earlier.
“In that regard, we would like to speak with a hiker who arrived at Philosopher Falls on Sunday, June 18 at around 2:30 p.m.,” the statement said. “That person has nothing to worry about. We do ask him to contact us as soon as possible. He can help us map out the last actions just before her disappearance.”
Viewing platform
Until Thursday, the search mainly focused on the hiking trail that leads to the waterfall. That easy trip normally takes about 45 minutes.
Yesterday the focus shifted more to the waterfall itself. Search and rescue personnel will descend from the viewing platform to search the surrounding dense forest area below.
Needle in haystack
However, it is looking for a needle in a haystack, as can be concluded from images shared by the police of the search area. Meanwhile, the sub-zero temperatures, the snowfall and the precipitation also complicate the task of the investigators. Police said earlier this week that the weather conditions in the wilderness are “unsurvivable”.
On departure, the Belgian was only provided for a light day trip. The police suspect that Céline got lost somewhere along the way or maybe slipped and fell.
Céline’s social media posts show that she has been traveling around Australia since June 2022. “I fell in love with this beautiful island,” she captioned a photo of Tasmania in February. Her Honda was equipped “for rustic living”. Cremer then lived and worked on the east coast of the island, in a remote area bordering a national park with several beaches.
