Australian Open – Nadal on the Djokovic case: “Justice must decide”

Melbourne (dpa) – The Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal made a cautious statement after the temporary lifting of the entry ban for Novak Djokovic to Australia.

“There has been a huge circus around the matter, but regardless of whether I agree with his story or not, a court has spoken. And that’s what matters,” said Nadal in a telephone interview with the Spanish TV broadcaster Onda Cero. “The judiciary has to decide in this case, and I am always an advocate of justice,” said Nadal.

Whether the unvaccinated Djokovic will actually be allowed to participate in the Australian Open, which starts next Monday, has not yet been determined, despite the court ruling on Monday. The Australian immigration minister can still make use of his personal rights and revoke the Serbian visa again.

Nadal recently criticized Djokovic for not being vaccinated. “I had Covid, I have been vaccinated twice. If you do that, you have no problem playing here and anywhere in the world. That is the only thing that is clear,” the Spaniard said. The people in Australia went through difficult times because of the pandemic. He can therefore understand the Australians’ displeasure with the medical exemption for Djokovic.
