Melbourne (AP) – The draw for the Australian Open scheduled for Thursday has been postponed by 75 minutes at short notice.
Originally, the duels for the first tennis grand slam of the year, which begins on Monday, should have started at 5 a.m. German time and, according to the Australian news agency AAP, should now start at 6:15 a.m. German time. According to the information, a few minutes before the originally planned start there was nothing to indicate the postponement. Reasons were not given.
At the time of the postponement, a visa decision for number one Serb Novak Djokovic was still pending. The 34-year-old number one in the world rankings is not vaccinated against the coronavirus, his visa could be withdrawn by the government. Djokovic had already been held up on arrival at the airport last week and initially taken to a deportation hotel because the border officials did not have the documents for his medical exemption. Djokovic successfully defended himself against the decision in court on Monday and has been training in Melbourne since then. He has already won the Australian Open nine times.
