Australia and Japan announce new sanctions against Russia
Australia and Japan have announced new sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Australian sanctions are mainly aimed at the Russian financial sector. For example, the Russian Ministry of Finance and eleven banks and government agencies have been added to the sanctions list. “We have now hit all Russian government agencies dealing with the national debt,” Foreign Minister Payne said in a statement†
In addition, the Australian government has imposed sanctions on two Russian oligarchs who have business interests in Australia. Oleg Deripaska is the chairman of the Russian aluminum company Rusal, Viktor Vekselberg has several international companies and is said to be worth around 5 billion euros. The two wealthy oligarchs have close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. They were previously on the sanctions list of the United States and the United Kingdom.
Japan has imposed sanctions on 15 people, including military officials. Nine companies are also subject to the sanctions, such as arms exporter Rosoboronexport. The Japanese now have 76 people, seven banks and 12 other organizations on the sanctions list.
