Austin (20) miraculously survives ‘thousands’ of bee stings: “It looked like he had a black blanket around his head, neck and arms” | Abroad

Being in the wrong place, at the wrong time. That’s what happened to Austin last Friday when he was pruning a lemon tree and the twenty-something paid with his life. The young man was standing on a ladder, but overlooked a huge nest of aggressive African honeybees, so-called ‘killer bees’. He accidentally sawed through the nest and was immediately attacked by the ferocious insects.

Bellamy was then taken to hospital by helicopter and kept in an artificial coma, Fox News reported. According to his family, the 20-year-old was stung more than 20,000 times and also swallowed dozens of bees during the attack.

His grandmother Phyllis Edwards witnessed the attack. “When he started cutting off the branches, the bees came out. He yelled, ‘Help, help me, help’.” His mother Shawna Carter also described the horror: “It looked like he had a black blanket around his head, neck and arms.”

Relatives saw Bellamy being attacked by the insects – but they couldn’t help because they were attacked themselves. Grandmother Phyllis had wanted to climb the ladder to help her grandson. “But I couldn’t get to him because I was surrounded by bees.”

According to Shawna, a local firefighter, Craig, saved her son’s life. “Craig is his savior and that means a lot to us.” According to her, her son also swallowed about 30 bees during the attack. It took the doctors more than a day to get them out of him.

The young man was released from his coma on Wednesday (local time) – despite his serious injuries, doctors expect him to make a full recovery.
