Auckland mayor declares state of emergency due to heavy rain

A state of emergency was declared in New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, due to heavy rain on Tuesday. The city, like large parts of the rest of the country, has been hit by severe weather. On Tuesday morning, the weather institute NIWA reported that more than 45 millimeters of rain fell per hour. In the Netherlands we call precipitation above 25 millimeters in one hour a downpour.
