Attention Men: Know the 3 diseases that affect the Prostate

Juan is 63 years old and consults because his wife scheduled him an appointment despite not having symptoms. The same day, Pedro, 53 years old, comes in scared because he notices that he no longer urinates like before, the stream comes out very thin and he gets up several times at night.

Although both have different diagnoses, they both have something in common: a prostate problem. How many times do we hear about this organ without knowing its function and the problems it can bring us?

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder surrounding the tube where urine passes (urethra). Its function is to produce substances that will nourish the sperm. Although it does not regulate erections, the nerves responsible for increasing the rigidity of the penis are in intimate contact with this gland.

There are 3 most important problems that affect this organ:

1-Prostatitis

They are a group of diseases characterized by inflammation in the prostate. Its diagnosis is complex and its symptoms can range from acute burning, fever and perineal pain, to intermittent symptoms, pelvic discomfort and difficulty urinating. Anal intercourse without a condom is a common cause in young people.

2-Benign prostatic hyperplasia

Many men will have symptoms associated with prostate growth. As the years go by, the size of this gland increases, which compresses the urethra and causes difficulty urinating, even leading to urine retention. Avoiding spicy foods and coffee usually improves mild symptoms, requiring medication or surgery in more advanced cases. Prostatic enucleation with Holmium or HoLEP laser is one of the most used techniques.

3-Prostate cancer

This is one of the most common tumors and its incidence increases with age. As it does not usually cause symptoms in the initial stages, control with prostate antigen (PSA) in the blood and a rectal examination is recommended from the age of 50 (or 40-45 years when there is a family history). Early diagnosis allows treatment with curative intent and avoid complications.

Urological consultation is important when there are symptoms like Pedro’s case, or after age 50 like Juan. Many people “don’t know” that they have a prostate until a problem appears, and that is when follow-up with a trusted professional becomes valuable. For this reason, do not hesitate to consult with your urologist.
