An unknown Saturday tried to kidnap a child in the vicinity of Tournai (province of Hainaut). This is reported by the French-language newspaper Nord Eclair. The public prosecutor of Tournai confirms Monday that something suspicious has happened, but does not give any details.

The facts took place on Saturday evening in Blandain, a borough of Tournai. According to Nord Eclair, the 10-year-old boy was on a trip with a group of adults. Some were by bicycle and others on foot. The boy had outrun the group at one point and was well ahead of the adults. On the road, a gray car blocked the boy and the driver, reportedly a man about 60 years old, allegedly wanted to lure the boy with candies.

The child did not respond and fled through a field. He sought help from a man nearby, a former police officer. The boy’s family filed a complaint with police later that day.

The public prosecutor’s office in Tournai confirmed on Monday that suspicious acts had indeed taken place on Saturday evening, but did not provide any details. The investigation is still ongoing.
