The Hamburg Regional Court has sentenced an 18-year-old from Berlin to two years in prison for attacking a vigil against anti-Semitism.
The sentence for serious bodily harm and insult was pronounced on Friday with a so-called preliminary probation, said a court spokesman. The young man first has to do anti-violence and skills training at a counseling center for the prevention of extremism. The youth chamber also asked him to do 60 hours of community service to make up for the damage. In about six months, the court will then decide on probation.
The attack happened on September 18, 2021 near Hamburg Central Station. The young man from Berlin hit a vigil participant in the face with his fist and seriously injured him. A younger brother of the defendant was also involved in the attack. The two young people were identified by the police a few days after the crime using video recordings.
Before the hearing at the district court began, the victim, a then 61-year-old, stated that he had undergone three surgeries after the attack. His nasal bone, cheekbone and the bone under one eye were broken.
