ATP tournament in Munich: Otte reaches the quarterfinals, BR-Sport – BR – Regional

Tennis pro Oscar Otte is the only German in the quarterfinals of the clay court classic at Aumeister in Munich. The 28-year-old beat the favorite world number 17. Reilly Opelka (USA) with 7: 6 (7: 4) and 6: 2 and now meets either Frenchman Hugo Gaston or Alejandro Tabilo from Chile. Both are in the world rankings behind the German (62nd).

“This is definitely my greatest success so far. I’m super happy, a lot is going right at the moment.”, said Otte in the press conference after his feat against the 2.11 m giant from Michigan. The right-hander wasted no thought on the endgame or even the title: “I’m really just looking from match to match and not at the draw.”

Without a plan, but with focus

Otte, who had thrown the Serb Marko Topo out of the competition in his opening match, surprised Opelka with his courageous game in the first round. In the tie-break, the Rhinelander finally laid the foundation for his great success. In the second round, Opelka couldn’t turn the ball and had to congratulate Otte after 89 minutes and the first match point.
