Atp Los Cabos, Medvedev wins the first tournament of the season: Norris knocked out in two sets

After five defeats in the final, the world number 1 returns to raise a trophy. Meanwhile, in Washington Kyrgios is in the final against the Japanese Nishioka

Finally Medvedev. The world number one won his first ATP title of 2022 by beating Cameron Norrie in Los Cabos, Mexico. The 26-year-old Russian won 7-5, 6-0 and after losing five finals (in a row) he returned to raise a trophy, something that did not happen from the US Open, of which from 29 August he will be called to defend the title. Until that moment, Medvedev already has the certainty of being number one in the world: no one will be able to oust him from the ATP throne. Not that the Russian intends to stop, far from it: as often happens to him on American hardcourt, he seems intent on destroying his opponents. Medvedev did not even concede a set in the Mexican tournament and, after being excluded from Wimbledon due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he is certainly the favorite at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, where Djokovic, Zverev and Nadal will be missing.

Surprise

In the ATP 500 in Washington, a surprise final, not so much for the presence of Nick Kyrgios, who had won this tournament in 2019, when for that of Yoshihito Nishioka, number 96 in the world. The Japanese southpaw in fact surprised 6-3 6-4 the very favorite Russian Andrey Rublev, seeded number one. Nishioka hadn’t won an ATP match since last March, but had achieved a semi-final and quarter-final at Challenger level in July. In the other semifinal, which saw Kyrgios as the winner, the Australian beat Swede Mikael Ymer 7-6 (4) 6-3. Also in Washington, in the women’s 250, Kaia Kanepi and Liudmila Samsonova will play for the final. The Estonian, world number 37 and sixth seeded in seeding, beat Australian Daria Saville (88) with a score of 6-3, 6-1. The Russian from Italy won over the Chinese Xiyu Wang with a double 6-1. In San Josè, in the WTA 500, the final between Daria Kasatkina and Shelby Rogers. The Russian beat the Spanish Paula Badosa 6-2 6-4, while the American defeated Veronika Kudermetova, 6-3 6-4.
