Atlético Madrid have won the city derby with Real Madrid. The duel in Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid ended in 1-0 for the home team of coach Diego Simeone. It is the first time since February 2016 that Atlético has beaten Real. In the previous eleven derbies, Real won six times and tied five times.
Real, which already secured the title in La Liga last weekend and qualified for the Champions League final this week by beating Manchester City, saved many basic players against Atlético. Thibaut Courtois and Karim Benzema, among others, remained on the bench. Luka Modric and Vinícius Júnior came on in the second half.
The home side took the lead from a penalty just before half-time. After a long review of the images, the video referee ruled that Atlético deserved a penalty for a foul on Matheus Cunha. Yannick Carrasco left goalkeeper Andriy Loenin without a chance.
Atlético is 6 points ahead of number 5 Real Betis with the win. Fourth place entitles you to play in the Champions League next season. There are still three rounds left in La Liga.
