Midfielder Andrés Balanta collapsed during a training session with Argentinian first division club Atlético Tucumán and died at the age of 22. “Atlético Tucumán regrets to have to confirm the death of Colombian footballer Andrés Balanta,” the club said on Twitter on Tuesday. The football associations of Argentina and Colombia were also dismayed at the young player’s unexpected death and offered their condolences to the family. At first, the cause of death was not clear.

Balanta became Colombian champions with Deportivo Cali in 2021 before moving to Tucumán on loan last summer. He played seven games for the club from north-west Argentina. Balanta went through various youth national teams and was in the Colombian squad for the U17 World Cup 2017 in India and U20 World Cup 2019 in Poland.
