The previous Finnish woman in the points position at the World Championships was Paula Tarvainen in Helsinki in 2005.
Silja Kosonen ended the disappointing run of Finnish women in Eugene on Sunday, when she took the blue and white points after a 17-year break.
That means placing in the top eight. Kosonen was seventh in the moukku final.
– Really!? Nice, Kosonen exclaimed.
The last time a Finnish woman had eight skis at the World Championship level was in 2005 in Helsinki, when the javelin thrower Paula Tarvainen placed sixth.
– We started the race with enthusiasm. It wasn’t as exciting as in qualifying. It felt like much more could have been possible. It’s a bit sad. The fifth throw annoyingly missed the net. It felt the best.
Kosonen’s best was 70.81.
– In the competition, I had an all-or-nothing attitude. Then it’s easier to make a mistake. Seventh place is quite good.
Kosonen’s season’s best result is 72.22 and last season’s record is 73.43. His average result before the World Cup final was 70.14.
– I probably wouldn’t have gotten close. I bet the Fifth throw would have been close. But there’s no need to bother. A good and even series.
