Noah Lyles won gold in the 100m at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Behind the American, thousandths of a second had to decide the medals.
The American won the race in 9.83 seconds and is now the world’s fastest man. It was the fourth consecutive world championship victory for the USA over the sprint classic after the era of Usain Bolt. Lyles got off to a strong start for his standards. Nevertheless, it was close in the end, the 26-year-old brought victory to the finish line with all his will.
“I’ve suffered a few losses, including in the 100m. When I went to the US Championships with Corona, I still got the bronze medal there. But a lot of people wrote me off.”said Lyles. “I knew what I had to do. I came here to get three gold medals, one is now done.” Lyles can win more medals in the 200m and 4x100m relay in Budapest.
thousandths of a second decide on places two to four
Lyles beat Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo in second (in a national record), as well as Zharnel Hughes (Great Britain) in third and Oblique Seville (Jamaica) in fourth. The three all crossed the finish line at the same time in 9.88 seconds, thousandths of a second had to decide the ranking.
Jacobs and Kerley miss the final
With Marcell Jacobs and Fred Kerley, the Olympic champion and the defending champion had previously missed the final. Olympic champion Jacobs from Italy finished fifth in his semifinals in 10.05 seconds and was eliminated. Kerley (USA), who finished behind Jacobs in Tokyo, did not manage to finish third in 10.02 seconds.
He was a hundredth of a second too slow, the last place in the time final was given to Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya in 10.01 seconds. Noah Lyles from the USA ran the best time of 9.87 seconds ahead of Chris Coleman (USA/9.88 seconds) and Oblique Seville (Jamaica/9.90 seconds).
For Julian Wagner (Erfurt), the only German starter, it was the end of the line in the preliminary heat.
