Athletics World Championships: Luzolo in the long jump final

After the injury-related retirement of Olympic champion and defending champion Malaika Mihambo, the women’s long jump final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest will take place with a German athlete.

Maryse Luzolo qualified on Saturday with 6.66 m as the tenth best athlete for the decision on Sunday (4:55 p.m.

Mikaelle Assani, who arrived with the best jump of the season of 6.91 m, did not get past 6.47 m and missed the final.

Olympic champion Mohambo had to withdraw injured

The last athlete qualified with 6.61 m for the final of the twelve best jumpers. The co-favorite American Tara Davis-Woodhall (6.87), European Champion Ivana Vuleta (Serbia/6.82) and the world’s best Ackelia Smith (Jamaica/6.78) made it through effortlessly.

Mihambo tore a muscle fiber at the German Championships in Kassel in July. The 29-year-old had hoped to start in Budapest for a short time, but then canceled her start out of consideration for the Olympic Games in Paris next year.

In addition to Mihambo, the German team in Hungary are missing other top performers due to injuries.
