American Ryan Crouser successfully defended his title as shot put world champion and just missed a world record.
At the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on Saturday, the Olympic champion and world record holder missed his own record of 23.51 meters in the last push by just five centimeters. The 30-year-old had already triumphed in previous title fights in Eugene a year ago.
The Italian Leonardo Fabbri surprisingly took silver with 22.34 meters in the first World Cup decision for men in the new athletics stadium. Former world champion Joe Kovacs from the USA secured bronze with 22.12 meters. German shot putters were not there.
The first women’s 10,000m title went to Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, who won in 31:27.18. In the hard-fought sprint to the finish, Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands fell a few meters from the line and had to let defending champion Letesenbet Gidey and Ejgayehu Taye pass.
All three medals went to the Ethiopian team. The race took place without German runners.
