Athletics World Championships 2023 in Budapest: the World Cup highlights today

Status: 08/25/2023 08:33 a.m

Today (08/25/2023) the decathlon starts in Budapest, in the evening four more gold medals will be awarded. The highlight are the two 200 m finals. The seventh day of competition at the World Championships in Athletics at a glance. We keep you up to date in the live ticker at sportschau.de.

Decathlon (10:05 a.m.)

The 23-year-old Leo Neugebauer goes into the World Cup decathlon in the DLV jersey as the leader of the world annual best list – and has his eyes on a medal. A good start to the competition is important for him and European Champion Niklas Kaul from Mainz. In the early session, after the 100 m, there is the long jump (10.55 a.m.) and the shot put (12.20 p.m.), in the evening the high jump (6.30 p.m.) and the 400 m run (9.08 p.m.) continue. Defending champion Kevin Mayer from France has not competed in a full competition so far this season, but he is one of the title contenders along with Canadian Damian Warner. Ulm’s Manuel Eitel is starting at a World Cup for the first time.

Javelin throw men (10.10 a.m.)

Julian Weber is another German hope for a medal in the javelin qualifier. Last year he won the European Championship title in Munich after coming fourth at the World Championships in Eugene and having missed a medal by more than a meter. So far this year only Jakub Vadlejch from the Czech Republic (89.51) has thrown further than the 28-year-old from USC Mainz (88.72 m). In qualifying, 83 m is enough for a place in the final on Sunday (08/27/2023, 8:15 p.m., live ticker at sportschau.de).

High Jump Women (10:20 a.m.)

Johanna Goering and Christina Honsel represent the German colors in the high jump qualification. 1.94 m is the qualifying height for entering the final on Sunday. For 18-year-old Göring from Stuttgart it is the first World Championships, she arrived with a best performance of the season of 1.91 m. Honsel surprisingly jumped 1.98 m indoors last winter, her best performance of the season outdoors is 1.83 m.

Christina Honsel finished sixth at the 2023 European Indoor Championships last winter.

4×100 m men and women (7.30/8.00 p.m.)

The preliminary heats in the relays, in which the places for the finals on Saturday (26.08.2023, 9.40 p.m. and 9.53 p.m., live on the first and on sportschau.de) are at stake, promise high tension on the track. While the DLV men’s relay missed the final in Eugene last year, the sprinters surprisingly won bronze behind the USA and Jamaica – it was one of only two medals for the German team at the 2022 World Cup. The DLV quartet then triumphed Gina Lückenkemper at the European Championships in Munich, the men botched the final with a mistake.

Triple jump women (7:38 p.m.)

Will Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas win triple jump World Championship gold for the fourth straight year – or will she be dethroned by the competition? In qualifying, Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts and Thea Lafond of the Dominican Republic continued to fail, but Rojas became the only person in the world to jump over 15 meters (15.12) this year. DLV athlete Kira Wittmann dropped out in the qualification.

At the 2022 World Championships, Yulimar Rojas jumped 15.47 m to win the gold medal.

Javelin throw women (8:20 p.m.)

The javelin throw used to be a specialty of German women, but that was a long time ago. In 2015 Katharina Molitor triumphed at the World Championships in Beijing. There are no DLV throwers in Budapest. The world’s best Haruka Kitaguchi from Japan (67.04 m) and Australia’s Mackenzie Little are favored in the final, defending champion Kelsey-Lee Barber from Australia and the Chinese Olympic champion Liu Shiying did not throw outstandingly in the qualification.

Haruka Kitaguchi from Japan now wants more after the 2022 World Cup bronze.

800m women (8:25 p.m.)

Will Christina Hering make it to the 800m World Cup final? The 28-year-old will answer this question in the second of three semi-finals at 8:35 p.m. In the lead-up, she narrowly missed a time of under two minutes with a best time of the season (2:00.06 min.). Getting into the final seems unlikely even if she beats her personal best time (1:59.41) in the semifinals – the world’s best in this discipline is simply too strong for that.

Christina Hering ranks 56th in the world annual best list.

200 m women and men (9.40/9.50 p.m.)

Noah Lyles was not shocked even by a golf cart accident before the semi-finals, while Sha’Carri Richardson saved valuable energy in the hunt for the World Cup double. The two US stars, who have each triumphed in the 100m in Budapest, sprinted effortlessly into their finals in the 200m. Andrew Hudson, who injured his eye in the accident, was actually out in the semi-finals in fifth place, but was subsequently set for the final by the judges is also allowed to run with the men.
