Pole vaulter Armand Duplantis breaks a record at the athletics meeting in Berlin and misses another. Sprinter Gina Lückenkemper is only third, but Malaika Mihambo achieves a clear victory in the long jump.

Pole vault star Armand Duplantis also showed a strong performance at the ISTAF Indoor in Berlin. Although the Olympic champion failed to break the world record height of 6.22 m, he jumped 6.06 m in front of 11,850 spectators in the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Friday, breaking his meeting record from last year (6.03). Only last week, the world and European champion from Sweden started the season with 6.10 m, nobody had done that before him.

For Vice European Champion Bo Kanda Lita Baehre (Leverkusen/5th place) and Gillian Ladwig (Schwerin/7th) it was already over in Berlin after skipping 5.60 m, things went better for the third German starter Torben Blech. The man from Leverkusen finished fourth with 5.73 m.

After his competition had failed at 5.91 m at the latest, Duplantis had 6.06 m put on, which he jumped over in the first attempt. The Swede, who had won the World Championships gold last year with 6.21 m, then started his next world record attempt over 6.22 m, but failed three times. Duplantis had already explained in advance that he deliberately chose his competitions in winter to “break his world record”, which was “top priority” for him.

“I associate a lot of beautiful moments with Berlin”

Gina Lückenkemper surprisingly became European champion over 100 meters in August. In the interview, the sprinter from SCC Berlin talks about the greatest success of her career, her love for the capital and the curse and blessing of social media.more

Lückenkemper third despite back problems

Sprint European champion Gina Lückenkemper, on the other hand, missed out on victory. Germany’s sportswoman of the year finished third in her home game over the 60 m in 7.16 seconds behind the EM third over 100 m Daryll Neita (Great Britain / 7.05 seconds) and Tristan Evelyn (Barbados / 7.14).

“I had back problems last week. My back didn’t feel good in the warm-up,” said Lückenkemper: “I’m grateful to the physios that they got me back together. I was surprised how well it worked. “

Lückenkemper was two hundredths of a second faster than almost two weeks ago at the ISTAF Indoor in Düsseldorf, where the 26-year-old from SCC Berlin started for the first time after her double triumph in Munich and took second place in 7.18 seconds. Lückenkemper had won the title in the 100 m and in the relay at the European Championships at home in the summer. Her teammates from the Munich Gold Relay Lisa Mayer (Wetzlar/7.20 seconds) and Alexandra Burghardt (Burghausen/7.22 seconds) took fourth and fifth place in Berlin.

Mihambo wins long jump competition

Long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo presented herself in good form about a week before the German indoor championships. The world champion secured victory with 6.81 m. Almost two weeks ago, Mihambo, who holds the meeting record with her personal indoor best of 7.07 m, started the long jump season in Düsseldorf with 6.83 m.

After she sprained her knee in the 3rd attempt, she “got a little out of the flow of the competition,” explained Mihambo. She is still satisfied with her width: “But there would definitely have been more.”

Mihambo took the lead in the first attempt with 6.72 m. After four failed attempts, the 29-year-old improved again in the last attempt.

Sprinter Prescod breaks meeting record

There have also been some amazing performances in the other sports. The Brit Reece Prescod broke the meeting record in the sprint and equaled the best performance of the year. Prescod covered the 60 meters in 6.49 seconds. Joshua Hartmann, second, missed the German record of 6.53 seconds by just one hundredth. Third was Julian Wagner with 6.56 seconds.

Prescod’s compatriot David King towered in the men’s 60 meter hurdles. He takes the win with 7.63 seconds ahead of Damion Thomas (Jamaica; 7.65 seconds) and Paolo Dal Molin (Italy; 7.69 seconds). Britany Anderson from Jamaica won the women’s race with 7.85 seconds. Michelle Jenneke just failed with 7.89 seconds.

In the end, the discus women and men fought each other in a direct duel. The women clearly won with 31 to 21 points. The three-time European Championship third Shanice Craft was in excellent form: the 29-year-old from SV Halle improved the unofficial indoor world record three times and screwed the record to 65.23 meters. Kristin Pudenz from SC Potsdam also threw 63.24 meters further than all male competitors.
