Ayo Folorunso promoted to the 400 hurdles final: a few hours after Andre Dallavalle’s silver in the triple and Sara Fantini’s bronze in the hammer, is the most positive news of the blue morning at the European Championships in Munich. Waiting, of course, for the evening finals (with risk of rain) by Gimbo Tamberi and Marco Fassinotti in the high (20.05), by Larissa Iapichino in the long (20.58), by Pietro Arese in 1500 (at 21.05) and by Nadia Battocletti in the 5000 (at 21.25). In addition to the semifinals of the 200 with Filippo Tortu, Fausto Desalu, Diego Pettorossi, Dalia Kaddari and Irene Siragusa.

Ayomide Folorunso, fresh from the Italian record set at the Eugene World Championships (54 ”30), runs the third of three heats: the first two pass to the final and the authors of the two best overall times are recovered. The blue, opposed to the unbeatable Dutch Femke Bol, the Ukrainian Anna Ryzhykova (silver in Berlin 2018, fifth at the Tokyo Games, eighth in Oregon) and the fearsome Belgian Anne Claes, cannot wade. Her race, in fact, is on the attack since the first barrier. The Emilian policewoman holds up well until entering the straight, when Bol and Ryzhyakova stretch (they will finish in 53 ”73 and 54” 25). She stumbles on the tenth and final obstacle, suffers in the final and finishes third in 54 ”98. Enough to hit the second half between the fished out (but the sixth overall), with a margin of 33/100 on the first excluded and find themselves in the final on Friday night. Mission accomplished. Not by Rebecca Sartori. The Venetian, with 57 ”29, is sixth in her battery, 22nd overall and eliminated.

Many others qualified for the day (in the semifinals). In the men’s 200, with the best 12 of the European seasonal list already promoted (Tortu included), Desalu and Pettorossi advance. The Olympic champion, in the eighth lane, controls with a certain ease and wins his heat with the season of 20 “46 (-0.6), the student in the United States is second in his own with 20” 65 (+0.3): they are worth the first and fourth performance of the lot. Among the women (already promoted in ten) a tough Irene Siragusa makes it (23 ”36 / + 0.5, sixth, twelfth overall and second fished out). In the 800s, Simone Barontini and Elena Bellò advance among the best sixteen. The Ancona rider with authority (he is second in his own, difficult battery in 1’45 “98, 6/100 from the staff), the Vicenza-based woman risking a lot, after a head race up to 700 meters (fifth in 2’01” 80 and second fished out). Several rejected. In the 200s an off Vittoria Fontana (7a in battery with 23 ”63 / + 0.3, 20a). In the 800s a reckless Catalin Tecuceanu (6th in 1’47 “94 after waiting too long to try to climb the group, 21st) and Eloisa Coiro (fourth in 2’04” 36, out for 4/100, but 25a). In the semifinals of the 400 obstacles (the best is of course the Norwegian Karlsten Warholm in 48 “38), Jose Bencosme and Mario Lambrughi were rejected, both with the same 49” 50 (but 3rd and 6th in their respective tests, with the first excluded for 4 / 100). In the 3000 failed hedges Martina Merlo (with fall) and Laura Dalla Montà (10’12 ”13 and 10’28” 20, 28a and 30a). In the auction nothing to do for the bruised Max Mandusic (three nulls at the entry measure of 5.35): for the final a 5.65 is enough, Mondo Duplantis gets it on the second attempt …

After six of seven heptathlon races (tonight’s 800 are missing) leads the champion of all, the Belgian Nafi Thiam, with 5776 points. Sveva Gerevini, after long (personal of 6.21 / + 1.2, seventh) and javelin (seasonal of 40.64, thirteenth), grows to 12th place with 5102.
