Long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo had to admit defeat for the first time this season at the Diamond League meeting in Rome.

The track and field athlete from the LG Kurpfalz came in at 6.79 meters with her best attempt and finished second. Mihambo did not hit the jump in the Olympic Stadium precisely enough and thus missed a larger distance.

Vice World Champion Maryna Bech-Romantschuk from Ukraine won with 6.85 meters. Third place went to Quanesha Burks from the USA with 6.77 meters. In Birmingham, Mihambo had already surpassed the seven-meter mark this season with 7.09 meters.

Storl in low form

Still far from his best is shot putter David Storl. The former world champion only came in eighth and penultimate with 20.10 meters. Victory went to Olympic silver medalist Joe Kovacs from the USA, who at 21.85 meters achieved the longest distance of the competition.

Because of back problems, Storl did not compete in outdoor competitions last year and did not take part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The norm for the World Championships from July 15 in Eugene, USA, is 21.10 meters. The European Championships in Munich will follow from August 15th.
