The Italian national and 3000 steeplechase specialist Ahmed Abdelwahed, silver medalist at the recent European Championships in Munich, tested positive during a doping control carried out during the event. The race was won by the Finnish Topi Raitanen, while the other blue Osama Zoghlami finished third.

The prohibited drug found in the analyzes would be Meldonium, included in the list of doping substances since 2016 and made headlines for the case of Russia and Maria Sharapova, the tennis player found positive in the tests and suspended for two years, after admitting that you have been using it for a long time, under the advice of your doctor. A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) also found that at the first European Games in Baku in 2015, 13 medals had taken Meldonium, 66 athletes had tested positive and the drug had been traced in athletes competing in 15 disciplines out of 21. Also for this reason, from 1 January 2016 the substance was included by Wada in the list of prohibited drugs.
