Sensation in the Spanish Cup: Real Madrid missed the semi-finals of the Spanish Football Cup with former world champion Toni Kroos. Bilbao had previously eliminated FC Barcelona.
The Spanish football record champion Real Madrid failed early in the Copa del Rey and has to wait for its first title win since 2014. Almost three weeks after winning the Supercup, the royal team lost 0-1 (0-0) to Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals of the cup.
Striker Alex Berenguer ensured the hosts’ successful revenge against the leaders in the Primera Division after a strong individual action with a precise shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 89th minute. Former world champion Toni Kroos was in the starting XI for Madrid and was substituted in the 76th minute.
Also in the semifinals is Betis Sevilla
Previously, Betis Sevilla had reached the semi-finals with a 4-0 (1-0) win at Real Sociedad San Sebastián. Double goalscorer Juanmi (12th and 57th minute), the Brazilian Willian Jose (83rd) and Aitor Ruibal (87th), who also came on after the break, scored for the visiting team. Rayo Vallecano (1-0 against RCD Mallorca) and FC Valencia (2-1 against FC Cádiz) booked the semi-final ticket for the Copa del Rey the night before.
Real Madrid secured their first title of 2022 at the Supercup in the desert on January 16th. The royals defeated defending champions Athletic Bilbao 2-0 (1-0) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
