Bielsa was an option
Two and a half years after leaving FC Barcelona, Ernesto Valverde is again facing a commitment as head coach. The 58-year-old has been traded for days as one of the candidates for the vacant post on the Athletic Bilbao bench and is the favorite after Friday night’s presidential election.
Jon Uriarte, who beat his teammates Iñaki Arechabaleta and Ricardo Barkala with 46.71 percent, had already announced in advance that he wanted to make Valverde coach of the Basque club for the third time after 2003 and 2013. If Arechabaleta had won, Marcelo Bielsa would have been almost certain.

Valverde managed Bilbao in 213 games between 2013 and 2017, averaging 1.64 points per game. The club last qualified for the Champions League under his leadership in 2014 and finished at least seventh in all four LaLiga seasons. Since the Spaniard’s departure, it was enough for a maximum of eighth place in the table.
