AND women’s recordsfinally, to Witch Award 2023. I am 45 writers among the 80 titles on the long list of the Prize and well eight of those entered by the Steering Committee of the Prize chaired by Melania Mazzucco in the twelve finalists.
The announcement of the candidates who will battle for first place opens the race and launch the competition towards the decisive rounds.
Strega Prize but how many women
In addition to the nice surprise of the many writers, also that of presence of beginners and small publishers who have never arrived at the Strega.
There are, of course, the two super favorites: Rosella Postorino with “I was just loving you” (Feltrinelli) e Roman Petri with “Steal the night” (Mondadori) two very different novels if they were to battle.
The Talented Dozen
The dozen still sees in pole position too Igiaba Scego with “Cassandra in Mogadishu” (Bompiani), Silvia Ballestra with “The Sybil. Life of Joyce Lussu” (Laterza) e Maria Grazia Calandrone with “Where you didn’t take me” (Einaudi).
One also enters the race trio of authors at their first novel: Ada D’Adamo with “Like air” (Elliot) in which she talks about her daughter’s disability and her own illness. So Maddalena Vaglio Tanet with “Back from the woods” (Marsilio), already a finalist in 2021 at the Strega Girls and Boys Prize.
And finally, Carmen Verde with “A little unhappiness” (Neri Pozza) in which Annetta recounts her life lived in the shadow of her mother.
The four male candidates
The other four candidates will be: Vincent Latronico with “The perfections”, story of dreams and disillusions set in Berlin e Andrew Canobbio with “The night crossing” (The ship of Theseus) in which Turin becomes a great theater of memory.
Andrew Tarabbiawinner of Campiello Award 2019, with “The White Continent” (Bollati Boringhieri) and Gian Marco Griffi with the choral novel “Railways of Mexico” (Laurana Publisher).
For the first five appointments on June 5th
There vote of the five will be on 7 June at the Roman Theater of Benevento and the winner will be proclaimed on July 6th at the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia, in Rome, from 11pm live on Rai3.
The candidate books will be read and voted on by one jury composed of 660 eligible candidatesincluding i 400 Sunday Friends who make up the historic award jury.
Among the voters, in addition to the collective and unpredictable votes of the 30 strong readers chosen by bookstoresthere will also be around 200 votes from 31 Italian cultural institutes.
European Strega Prize: the five finalists
Also announced five of the European Witch now in its tenth edition. The finalists are: Emmanuel Carrere with “V13” (Adelphi), Esther Kinsky with “Rhombus” (Hyperboorea), Andrei Kurkov with “The ear of Kiev” (Marsilio), Johanne Lykke Holm with “Witch” (NN Publisher) e Burhan Sonmez with “Stone and shadow” (night time). The final in Turin at the Circolo dei Lettori on May 21st.
