At least sixteen people were killed and fifty to sixty injured in a shooting in the town of Lewiston in the American state of Maine on Wednesday, Reuters news agency reported. According to local media, shots were fired in three different places in the city. The police speak of a male perpetrator without providing further details.
Photos released by police show the gunman walking around with a semi-automatic weapon. Police are calling on Lewiston residents on X, formerly Twitter to stay indoors with the doors locked. Lewiston is the second largest city in Maine and has a population of about 36,000.
The White House says that President Joe Biden has been informed of the situation. This is the deadliest shooting since May 2022, when a man shot and killed nineteen children and two teachers at a school in the town of Uvalde, Texas.
