At least four dead after bullring collapses in Colombia: images show moment that six stands come down | Abroad

Part of an arena has collapsed during a bull run in Espinal, Colombia. A total of six stands came down, according to television channel RCN Televisión. Tolima Department Governor José Ricardo Orozco told BLU Radio that at least four people have been killed and 60 injured. He emphasized that these are provisional figures.

Espinal is located in the center of Colombia, about 100 kilometers southwest of the capital Bogota. The incident happened today during the folkloric festivities of San Juan and San Pedro, in the Plaza de Toros Gilberto Charry.


The stands of that arena are made of wood. Footage of the collapse shows how many people end up under the rubble. So there was a lot of people in the arena.

In the middle of the arena some men try to restrain a bull. Some of the bulls are said to have escaped and ran through the streets of Espinal, causing additional panic.

According to Governor José Ricardo Orozco, at least four people have been killed – two women, a man and a child – and about 60 injured. The Civil Defense spoke at radio station W Radio of at least two dead and seventy injured in the arena. She previously reported nine injuries from bull attacks, according to radio network Caracol Radio. Six of them were taken to hospital because they were in bad shape. They had injuries to vital organs and trauma to various parts of their bodies.

President

Colombia’s newly elected new president Gustavo Petro took to Twitter to express his condolences, also pointing out that it is not the first time such an incident has happened. He asks all mayors to ban such events.
