At least six people have been killed and 36 injured in a shooting during a parade in a Chicago suburb, US media reported. The 22-year-old gunman was arrested without incident on Monday evening.
The parade in Highland Park was on July 4, US National Day, which celebrates Independence. The man fired his shots from a rooftop. There, officers found the heavy rifle with which he struck.
The parade was immediately ended. Festivities in the area have also been canceled. When the first shots were fired, parade participants and spectators scattered in blind panic, video footage shows. The background of the incident is not yet known.
The Independence Day shooting comes as many Americans have other recent massacres in the United States still fresh in their minds.
