In São Sebastião, no less than 60 centimeters of rain fell within 24 hours. That is as much as normally falls in two months.
Almost all fatalities are therefore to be regretted in that place. The death toll in São Sebastião stands at 35. Someone was also killed in the city of Ubatuba. Henguel Pereira, a senior government official in the state, also fears the worst. “Unfortunately, we will find many more dead,” he warned in a local newspaper. The authorities have not yet released figures on the number of missing and injured.
The governor of the state of São Paulo has declared a state of emergency in five cities along the coast. It is expected that it will continue to rain heavily in the affected coastal region for the time being, which will complicate rescue efforts.
