At least 16 dead and 85 injured in Greece train collision | Abroad

UpdateAt least 16 people have been killed in a collision between two trains in central Greece. Another 85 others were injured. Emergency services have reported this. Earlier, local media spoke of “several dead and injured”.

The collision between a passenger train and a freight train happened outside the city of Larissa, more than 300 kilometers north of the capital Athens. The route connects the capital with Thessaloniki, the country’s second largest city

The cause of the collision has not yet been determined, but initial information suggests that at least three wagons derailed after a freight train and a train with 350 passengers on board collided. One of the wagons then caught fire. Several people are said to be trapped in the wreckage, Greek public broadcaster ‘Ert’ reports.

The emergency services arrived en masse to provide assistance to the dozens of injured people, wrote the local newspaper ‘Onlarisssa’.

Omroep ‘Skai’ showed images of derailed, destroyed train carriages, over which thick plumes of smoke hung. Seventeen fire engines were deployed to contain the fire. That has now been successful, according to the fire service.
