At least 14 dead after collapse of illegally occupied apartment building in Brazil | Abroad

The building, which had three floors and contained several apartments, had collapsed on Friday. Originally, the balance was eleven dead and eleven injured, but on Saturday the three missing persons – a woman and two children – were also found dead under the rubble.

The apartments in the building were closed in 2010 due to the risk of collapse, but were still illegally occupied, according to the civil protection of the state of Pernambuco.

In April, in the town of Olinda, also in Pernambuco, six people were killed in a building collapse. Disasters like this occur regularly in the poorer neighbourhoods, where people have less access to good housing.
